Import Word, PDF, PowerPoint, Final Draft or Fountain

Open the file with the app or import it from the library. Word, RTF and text keep their formatting, a PDF comes in as plain text, and a PowerPoint brings its speaker notes with a cue for every slide.

  1. Bring the file in. Import from the library, open the file from the Files app or another app's share sheet, or use File, Open on the Mac.
  2. Check what came in. Word (.docx) keeps its styles, so a bold heading stays bold. RTF keeps bold, italic, underline, size and alignment; tables are dropped and their text kept. Plain text that isn't UTF-8 is read in the older encodings too.
  3. PDFs come in as text. Page by page, with hyphenated line ends joined. A scanned PDF that is only pictures has no text to bring in.
  4. PowerPoint brings the speaker notes. The notes come in the deck's playing order with a cue for each slide, labeled Slide 1, Slide 2 and on, so the next cue is the next slide. The slides themselves don't come in, and a deck with no notes is turned away with a message saying so.
  5. Screenplays keep their shape. Final Draft (.fdx) and Fountain (.fountain, .spmd) come in with scene headings, characters and dialogue styled the same way.

A file can be up to 256 MB. Keynote and Google Docs aren't read directly: export to Word (.docx) or PowerPoint (.pptx) first.

If that didn't work

If a file comes in empty or garbled, send it to us with the app it came from. Write to us.
