What the Mac app does

Cutvey Teleprompter on the Mac is a native Mac app built from the same code as the iPhone and iPad app, and it comes with the same purchase. It needs macOS 14 or later.

On the MacWhat it means for you
The full prompterEvery scrolling mode, cues with their own speed, a countdown, run orders, quick edits, the reading aids and voice follow
Call modeShrinks the prompter to a strip right under the built-in camera, so you read while looking at the people on a call
Hide from screen sharingLeaves the prompter window out of screen sharing and recordings made on the Mac (test it on a call first)
Keep on top and opacityThe prompter floats over other apps and can fade to 25 percent, and it still takes clicks
External Feed windowA clean copy of the script, with no controls, to drag to a second display or a rig
Contour ShuttlePro v2 and ShuttleXpressA jog wheel for the scroll, the way an edit controller drives a deck
Keyboard controlEvery key can be changed
SessionsThe Mac can host a session or join one as a remote, a monitor or an editor
Not on the MacRecording with the camera (that is iPhone and iPad)

Call mode, under the camera

Press Shift-Command-K, or choose Call mode in the Window menu, and the prompter becomes a short strip right under your Mac's camera, floating above everything else. Your eyes stay a finger's width from the lens, so on the other end it looks like you are talking to them. Press Shift-Command-K again and the window goes back where it was.

Inside Call mode, Hide from screen sharing is on by default. In the app's own words: "Check with a test call before you rely on it: an app that captures the screen in an older way may still show this window." So do a test call with a colleague before the real one. Reading on a video call covers it in full.

Over a slide deck or a recording

Outside Call mode the prompter is an ordinary window that can float. In the prompter's Settings, under Mirror & display, turn on Float over other apps and lower the opacity until the deck shows through. The window keeps taking clicks all the way down to 25 percent, so you can start, stop and scrub without switching to it. Full screen pauses both and puts them back when you leave it. These settings belong to this Mac and never travel with a script.

A second display or a rig

Choose External Feed in the Window menu (Shift-Command-E). A window opens with the script and nothing else, and you drag it to a second display or the screen under a beam splitter, then make it full screen there. You keep the controls on the main screen.

The feed has its own mirror switches, so the glass reads correctly while your own screen reads normally. The layout picker decides who gets the words: Both screens, Rig only (the words on the rig and the clocks, cues and transport on the Mac) or This device only (the rig holds a standby card while you read on the Mac). The feed shows the same words as your screen even when the two are different sizes. Rig setup.

Driving it with a jog wheel

Plug in a Contour ShuttlePro v2 or ShuttleXpress. The first time, macOS asks for Input Monitoring: turn on Cutvey Teleprompter under Privacy & Security, Input Monitoring in System Settings. The app explains that macOS applies this rule to every USB control surface, and that no keystrokes are read anywhere.

  • The outer ring is speed while you hold it. Away from you runs the script forward; toward you runs it back for a pickup. Let go and the scroll goes back to how it was, from wherever the ring left it.
  • The inner dial nudges the reading line a line at a time, running or not. The step is yours to set, from a quarter of a line to four lines.
  • The buttons start and stop, jump cues, change scripts in a run order and jump the speed. You can remap them; the ring and dial stay as they are.
  • Ring speed comes in Gentle, Standard and Aggressive.

The Mac with your other devices

The Mac is often the best seat for the person running the prompter. Host on the iPad behind the glass and join from the Mac as an editor: you drive the speed from the keyboard and fix a word in the script while the presenter reads, and the read line does not move. Or host on the Mac and let an iPhone join as a monitor for the camera operator. An Apple Watch can drive a Mac session through an iPhone that has joined it. Pair a second device.

What the Mac needs

macOS 14 or later, with no extra purchase: install it from the Mac App Store with the Apple Account that bought it on iPhone or iPad and it opens. Scripts, folders and run orders arrive from your other devices through your own iCloud. Voice follow on the Mac uses Apple's on-device speech recognition like the iPhone and iPad, so the Mac must have Apple's on-device model for the script's language.

Questions people ask

Is there a teleprompter app for Mac that also runs on iPhone and iPad?

Yes. Cutvey Teleprompter is a native Mac app and an iPhone and iPad app from one $19.99 purchase on the same Apple Account, with the Apple Watch remote.

Can I hide the teleprompter from screen sharing on a Mac?

Cutvey Teleprompter has a Hide from screen sharing switch, on by default in Call mode. The app itself says to check with a test call first, because an app that captures the screen in an older way may still show the window.

Does the Mac app record video?

No. Recording with the camera is on iPhone and iPad. On the Mac, record in your usual app while the prompter floats or sits under the camera.
