App language and script language
The app's language and each script's language are separate settings. The app comes in 41 languages; a script's own language decides voice follow, the reading direction and the reading-time estimate.
- Set the app's language. In Settings, under Language, choose App language. The first choice follows the device. Quit and reopen the app to switch; on the Mac, press Relaunch now.
- Choose the language new scripts start in. Scripts start in sets the default for new scripts.
- Set a script's own language. On the prompter's Text page, or in the editor, the Language row shows the script's language. It reads detected when the app filled it in, or default when it came from Scripts start in. Pick one to set it yourself.
How the app guesses a script's language
When you save a script, the app fills in its language if it is confident: it needs at least 40 words (80 characters for Chinese and Japanese), and both halves of the script have to agree, so a script in two languages stays on the default. It never changes a language you chose yourself.
The app's 41 languages: English (US and UK), French (France and Canada), German, Spanish (Spain and Latin America), Italian, Portuguese (Portugal and Brazil), Dutch, Swedish, Danish, Norwegian, Finnish, Polish, Czech, Slovak, Hungarian, Romanian, Croatian, Slovenian, Lithuanian, Latvian, Estonian, Greek, Russian, Ukrainian, Bulgarian, Turkish, Catalan, Indonesian, Vietnamese, Thai, Hebrew, Arabic, Farsi, Japanese, Korean, and Chinese (Traditional and Simplified).
If that didn't work
If the script's language keeps coming back wrong, set it by hand on the Text page: a language you pick is never changed. Write to us.
